To collect data, or information needed to answer their questions, scientists often conduct experiments, or procedures carried out under controlled conditions to gather information and test ideas. Bormann and Likens collected and analyzed data on the water and soil nutrients flowing from a patch of an undisturbed forest and from a nearby patch of forest which they had cleared of trees for their experi-ment.
